SATURDAY, JUNE 20 GAY PRIDE
Christopher Street West/Los Angeles opens the gates on its 11th annual Gay Pride Festival at 10 this morning, with official opening ceremonies at noon. The festival occupies 80% of the giant parking lot adjacent to the Pacific Design Center on San Vicente between Santa Monica Blvd. and Melrose Ave. in West Hollywood.
Geared to a county fair atmosphere, there will be over 100 booths containing prize-winning games of skill, social & political information, clothes and accessory boutique, and unusual gifts. Original art, sculpture and handcrafts will be available at extremely affordable prices. Surrounding an umbrella tabled "mini-park," will be a vast assortment of ethnic and continental food kitchens offering delicacies representing every major country in the world (and a few minor countries too). There will also be the reliable hot dogs and hamburgers. Soft drinks and ice cream will be on hand, and three professionally staffed booths will dispense ice cold beer and wine coolers.
The festival will also feature three entertainment areas. The world's largest disco arena, the grandstand stage show, and a new country/western show. New this year, too, is a child care center staffed professionally that will allow parents to enjoy the festival at their leisure while tots and youngsters are entertained by clowns, puppet shows and things to do. Evenings, the only hot-air ascension balloon in Los Angeles will lift visitors (free) above the glowing exposition where they may view a laser light show beamed BUCK ROGERS' HAPPENINGS
